Pet-friendly hotels were once hard to find and almost unheard of but in recent years, more and more hotel chains have become pet-friendly which is good news for dog moms like me.
Whether you’re planning a weekend road trip, family vacation where the dog can come too, or just enjoy having your furry friend as a travel buddy, here’s a list of the best pet-friendly hotel chains to make planning your next adventure a little easier.
What Hotel Chains are Pet-Friendly?
Motel 6
With more than 1,400 properties across the United States, Motel 6 is a great option if you’re a budget traveler or just don’t want to spend a lot on a quick overnight trip. Well-behaved pets are welcome at their locations and stay for free but there is a limit of 2 pets per room.
Best Western
Best Western has more than 1,600 properties across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. While there are some restrictions, pet-friendly locations allow up to 2 dogs with a maximum size of 80 pounds per dog. Some properties charge a pet fee but it is capped at $150.00 per room/per week. Additionally, Best Western may charge a refundable pet deposit of $150.00 per stay. Be sure to call the property you plan to book with directly to discuss.
Marriott: Residence Inn / Townplace Suites / Courtyard
These hotel chains are part of the Marriot Brand which offers more than 1,500 dog-friendly locations across the United States through a number of hotel brands. Contact the specific property directly to find out more about their pet policies before booking.
Extended Stay America
Four-legged friends are welcome at Extended Stay America but they do have a few restrictions. Only two pets are allowed per suite and can be no longer than 36 inches and no taller than 36 inches. More than two animals and larger dogs may be accepted but require the approval of the property manager.
Extended Stay America does charge a pet cleaning fee of $25 a day per pet (not to exceed $150.00 per pet). The fee is non-refundable and charged at check-in.
La Quinta Inn & Suites
La Quinta, a Wyndham brand, is a popular pet-friendly chain with pet parents, myself included, thanks to their 2 pets per room policy and their many locations across North America. La Quinta welcomed pets with no additional pet fee or deposit across all of their properties until last year. The pet policy was changed in early 2019 and now leaves the decision to charge an option pet fee at check-in ($20 per night or maximum of $40 per stay) up to each individual property. Be sure to contact the property you book at directly to find out about any possible pet fees required during your stay.
Aloft Hotels
The Aloft hotel is known for it’s ultra-modern and contemporary feel is one of thirty hotel brands to fall under the Marriott International umbrella with properties throughout North America. 101 of their 169 North American locations are pet-friendly.
So pet-friendly in fact that they have an entire program dedicated to pets. The “arf” program welcomes pets upon check-in. Perks include a special bed, bowls, toys and treats for use during your stay. There’s no charge for pets and leashed pets are welcome throughout the property so go ahead and play a game of pool or belly up to the bar for that nightcap because Fido can come too.
Candlewood Suites
Candlewood Suites is pet-friendly but fees and restrictions apply. Pets must weigh less than 80 pounds and proof of up-to-date vaccinations is required for all pets. Additionally, they ask that if you book online to call ahead and let the specific location know that you’ll be traveling with a pet.
IHG Chains: Holiday Inn/ Holiday Inn Express / Hotel Indigo
These chains and others are part of the IHG family and a majority of their properties do welcome pets but it’s best to call ahead since locations and specific hotels might have different rules.
America’s Best Value Inn
America’s Best Value Inn, part of the Vantage Hospitality family of brands, is the fastest-growing hotel chain in the country with over 1,000 locations throughout North America. There’s plenty of destinations to choose from in both the U.S. and Canada and most are pet-friendly but definitely call ahead to make sure.
Choice Hotels: Quality Inn, Comfort Inn, Sleep In, WoodSpring Suites
Pets are part of the family at Choice Hotels and with more than 3,500 pet-friendly hotels across the country and several brands you’re sure to have plenty of options. I only named a few of the brands under the Choice Hotel brand umbrella because each hotel has a unique pet policy. However, in general, Choice Hotels allows two dogs per room but no pets on the bed. There are specific weight restrictions that vary by location. Large dogs require approval.
A nightly fee also applies ($10-75 per pet, per night) but varies by hotel and a refundable deposit may also be required. Guests are encouraged to read over the pet policy on the Choice Hotels website before booking and should contact the specific location with questions.
Booking Pet-Friendly Hotels
There’s no shortage of great pet-friendly hotel chains to book at but I like to use Hotels.com to book my travel because the site features a pet-friendly filter option (under the amenities tab) so I can easily view available properties at my destination. With just a few clicks this filter allows me to compare various properties to find the best price and I can be sure my dog will be welcomed to stay, too.
The rewards program is pretty generous, too. Collect 10 nights at any eligible property booked through their site and you’ll earn a free night. Planning a 7-day trip? Use the site to book and you’ll be well on your way to a free night. Trust me, those nights add up pretty quick – I’ve cashed in a few myself!
